Why / When to Use the Model 4045 ST Fiber RS422 Converter:
Long Distance Serial Communication:
- RS422 is a differential serial standard that's good for longer cable runs compared to RS232. But even RS422 over copper has limits due to noise, ground loops, etc.
- By converting to fiber, running a serial link over a longer distance can be done without electrical issues.
Industrial Environments / Harsh EM Environments
- If you have industrial equipment (PLC’s, factory automation, scales, barcode readers, time clocks) that talk RS422 and the environment is electrically noisy (lots of motors, EMI), fiber helps isolate and avoid interference.
- The galvanic isolation protects against ground loops, surges, and voltage differences between devices.
Data Collection / Remote Serial Devices
- Connecting remote data collection devices to a central controller or PC over long distances.
- Point to point serial link
Optical Isolation for Safety / Signal Integrity
- In systems where isolation is critical (for safety, for reducing ground loop problems, or protecting sensitive electronics) fiber is often used.
- Fiber optic cables are more difficult to tap into than copper cables, providing a more secure data link
- This converter makes it possible to bridge the gap and connect RS422 industrial/legacy devices to newer fiber based infrastructure.
