Electro Standards Labs Receives a Phase II SBIR Award to Develop Advanced Sensorless Control of Linear Motors for Next Generation Aircraft Launch Systems |
| |
|
| |
CRANSTON, RI - Electro Standards Laboratories, a pioneer in the development of advanced electric motor control systems and a provider of innovative research and development services to its clients, announced today that it has been awarded a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) award from the Department of the Navy, Naval Surface Warface Center. |
| |
|
| |
Electro Standards Laboratories will use the funding from the Phase II SBIR to extend the state-of-the-art in sensorless control to linear motor systems, and in particular to the demanding transient requirements of Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS). A variety of methods will be assessed and a new sensorless controller for linear motors will be developed to meet or exceed the EMALS requirement. |
| |
|
| |
The development of a robust sensorless controller will have immediate benefits for both linear motor and rotational motor systems. Servo-grade performance without mechanical sensors improves relilability, survivability, and reduces the cost for closed loop control, making it applicable to a wide variety of industrial, commercial, and military applications. Prime candiates for this technology include: linear motor aircraft launch and arrest systems; linear motor conveyor belt and transport systems for moving factory goods through production or storage facilities; linear or rotary vehicle and craft propulsion systems; hybrid electric vehicles; fly-by-wire systems; more-electric aircraft, vehicles, and ships; electrification of mining and drilling equipment; and othe machine tool and general automation industries.
